Proximate Cause

“Proximate cause refers to the primary cause of an injury — the action that set the harmful events in motion in a way that was reasonably foreseeable. It limits liability to consequences closely connected to the act.”

Proximate cause helps courts decide whether a defendant should be held responsible for injuries. If the harm was a foreseeable result of their actions, they may be liable. If it was too remote or unusual, they may not.
